Bulgarian Voices Berlin

Bulgarian Voices Berlin is a women’s vocal ensemble dedicated to traditional Bulgarian polyphonic singing, led by conductor Boryana Velichkova and founded in 2009.
With a focus on Bulgarian vocal techniques and regional singing styles, their practice is defined by close harmonies, dissonance, and complex ornamentation. Drawing on traditions from different parts of the country, the ensemble’s repertoire reflects a range of vocal forms shaped by specific local contexts and histories. Working within and beyond folklore, Bulgarian Voices Berlin approaches these songs as a living practice, maintaining their technical precision while situating them within contemporary performance contexts. The ensemble emphasizes collective voice and the physicality of singing, creating dense sonic textures through polyphony.
