Yara Mekawei
Yara Mekawei is a Cairo born sound artist, sonic researcher and composer working between Cairo and Berlin. Her practice explores the relationship between sound, space, and architecture, translating urban sonic environments into immersive auditory and visual compositions. Drawing on research in architectural theory, social history, and philosophy, her work engages with questions of time, memory, and perception. Mekawei often bridges historical and contemporary narratives, translating knowledge systems from Sufi philosophy and ancient texts into experimental sound works and performances. Her research-driven practice unfolds across installations, live performances, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, reflecting on cultural identity, embodiment, and the sensory dimensions of experience. Mekawei has presented her work internationally, including at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Seoul Mediacity Biennale, CTM Festival, and institutions such as Haus der Kulturen der Welt and SAVVY Contemporary.
